Favourite Rides: A272 South East ( east to west )

Post by Steve »

My all time favourite A road in the South East.

Start off in Maresfield (just right of Haywards Heath), stop in Billingshurst for a coffee and then motor on - starts to get good and twisty now - to Winchester.
As the crow flies, it's about 65+miles.......but with all the twists and turns you can double that.
Take a day off and enjoy it, I bet you'll be back again quicker then you think.

I use this road to go to my dad's and am up there at the weekend, pretty much every weekend if I'm not busy. Loomies are really making an effort as well, worth a stop in there if you get that far from your end.

Nice road coming from the Petersfeild end. You can follow it out via Tonbridge, Paddock wood and then onto the M20 at Maidstone.

And don't forget the Petersfield to Winchester section either, lovely twists and turns, scenic as hell, great tarmac, very very few places for the tin box proles to pull out on you, and in the middle of it, that glorious wondrous straight on a long downhill (coming from Winchster way) where you can max out almost any bike, if only briefly, before braking hard and throwing the bike left, then right through the tree lined section.

When I lived in that area, I knew every lump, bump, every tree, and rode it at least every weekend for the pure joy of it - if you live anywhere near it, do give it a go - but watch out for mobile speed cameras - apparently it developed a reputation as somewhere crazy bikers went to ride at stupid speeds.... I don't think I ever saw any though ;)

PS there's even a few areas where you'll often see crop circles on this ride at the right time of year (the area where they hold homelands is one, I understand that this is also where troops were massed for a motivational speech before the D-Day landings :salut: )
