Linux 1 - 2018 could be the year of the penguin..

So Jan 2'nd.. I thought I'd start a first post on one of my hobbies.. LINUX..

Starting with an overview.. Just to be sure - it's pronounced Lin - ux NOT Li - nux

Some may have heard of it, some may not.. Some couldnt give a monkeys.. :-bd

So why am I bothering..?

This last year saw a couple of people have a few issues with their comps.. and it made me think (As I never have those issues - or ever will)
that i would share what I consider to be quite an easy and Free solution to all problems..

If your a big gamer - then it's best you go and do something else, because this isnt for you..



If you would like to have a computer that is Reliable (Reliably Reliable) and is free to run forever.. that laughs it's t*ts off at viruses malware and wannacry.. =))

So what is LINUX..

Despite what you may believe, there is more out there than Microsloth windoze.. (as a small note - what do you think they write windoze on) 8-}

It's another Operating system. There are actually quite a few.. The main one (the god of operating systems) is UNIX..

Invented way back in time in the 70's by AT&T.. but as they own it they wont give it away free.. and it's VERY expensive..

Due to other interested parties having a hand in it.. a version that was free emerged and it was named BSD and was free :-bd

(Just for the mac users.. a variation of this is what Steve Jobs nicked and turned into the Mac operating system)

And Linux has nothing to do with all of that except that way back in the early 90's a very clever guy named 'Linus' created a total clone of UNIX for his uni project. So good in fact that it became an over night success..

It was FREE.. and allmost as good as UNIX.

Microsoft dont really fall into any of this because it's in a world of it's own. Totally different code and ways of doing things..

But it's old..

Yup - UNIX came out in the 70's and hasnt been bettered yet.. but it's sooo expensive and very very hard to set up - Hard as in even a Microsoft employee would struggle..

Linux wasnt a lot different untill UBUNTU Linux came along :-bd and made it easier to install than even windows 98


Just so you know - the Logo for LINUX is 'Tux' the penguin..



and the logo for BSD - is 'Beastie' the devil









So here we are -----------------


** Things to know about Linux (and other UNIX like systems) **

1. It is Not Windows

2. Linux users are either total Nerds or arrogant wan*ers

3. It is not Windows

4. Hackers use Linux - it's that good. (Nobody ever hacked anything with windows) thats something we will touch on - computer myths

5. You need to learn some basics

6. It can be set up automaticaly by the disk - and it will be cr*p and crippled.



So the whole point of this is going to be to show you some basics first (that wont go amiss even if you use them with windoze)

I cant show you at the moment how simple this is going to be - you will see that as it goes along..

But at the end of it - you will be running a system that is capable of running a Supercomputer -

This is the 'Sunway TaihuLight'. It's the worlds fastest supercomputer to date



and it runs on LINUX
(If you showed it a Windows 10 disk it would have a meltdown) )

You wont see any blue screens of death on that..

So I've allmost finished some pics and write up's to get us going.. and posted this to fire myself up again after crimbo..



So why would this interest me..?


Well if your a Gamer - it probably wont..

But if you'd just like a computer that works.. Every day -
Forget the words - Virus - malware etc..
Something that when you've set it up will last well over 5 years before you ever have to make another setting -
something that cannot loose all your precious data -
something that can even repair / re clone itself or even a broken windoze system

and something that the 'expert' we all know down the street who can 'fix it' by reinstalling windows and loosing all your stuff will be in awe of..
(Even if you dont know what i'll tell you to say means) ) )

I've considered this on and off for a few years but as I got given a free W7 Ultimate code years back and its never been that much of a problem.

I do need to reformat at some point but the broadband to our house is painfully slow and pretty much unusable on a pc so I've been putting it off. The Windows updates alone would take days.

So my questions are.
How much data would I need to download to get everything set up?
Is it possible to download this via my phone using a wireless pci card?

I'm guessing I could download everything I need and save it on a usb stick first?

but i would say, yes..download what you can elsewhere, and install via USB..
(linux did used to send out linux flavour on cd's, so eminently doable :-bd )

How bads bad ? Slower than a phone..?

Is it the connection or is it the win 7 draging it's ar*e on the pc by being to bloated.. like did it come with win 7 oiginaly ?

also what do you do on it.. like do you mainly use a browser ? like chrome / firefox etc..

or do you have a collection of fave programs like photoshop.. wavelab.. office ?

I ask that because the version of linux can be chosen to suit your best needs.

So my questions are.

Long winded answer - A LINUX like Ubuntu and it's varients come out every 6 months.. to be on the cutting edge of tech.. so the reall nerds
download this every 6 months and reformat and install.. and seem happy doing that.,.. (it's not a hassle like windows as everything (drivers / office etc are all in the install) Unlike windows Linux alleady comes with software set up in it)

Every 2 years - a version is put aside and called the LTS - the long term release - the last one was v16.04 - the next is 18.04 which will be comming out around july this year..

This LTS version is the buisiness one - it has a 5 year life.. at any time in that 5 years you can throw a new LTS version at it and it will upgrade itself..

So what i'm saying is if you download a 16.04 LTS version which is allmost 2 years old now - the updates to that are around 300 meg to bring it up to date. That includes all updates to system and software.

You dont have to actually do them to make it workable or safe - Linux doesnt work that way. It will be ok and safe right out of the box..
but when you feel like it you can upgrade and it will be around 300 meg..

When Linux downloads upgrades and any other software for installation it doesnt delete it - so you can go into a folder and copy paste all the installation files to a new folder and keep them.. or use them on another computer.. or give them to someone else.

So if you had no connection at all.. some other linux user could send you them on a disk after he'd done his..

or zip them all up into a single zip file and let you download that overnight. Theres allways a way.

So 300 meg is the worst case scenario

Is it possible to download this via my phone using a wireless pci card?

Absoloutly :-bd No poblem at all

When i had no wifi, i used to just plug my phone in and switched on USB tether in the phone - instant wired net connection.. (especially with android)

To upgrade from scratch on that took about 20 mins..

If you have an android or apple phone you can switch on the WIFI Hotspot and have mobile wifi straight to your comp..

again just as easy as plugging it in.

This is one of the things that Linux 'just does' without much hassle.

So YES - cr*p wifi is no problem.. many ways around that.

Get your head around this one - you can wait untill one of us has installed it AND fully updated it and then ask them if they would kindly hit a couple of buttons and....

Re-clone their machine (with updates) into a brand new installation disk and send you that

Thats the equivalent of saying - I can install windoze 10, then fully update / upgrade it - THEN - install Office, Photoshop, Audacity, and another 3 gigabyte of any of my favourite software - set it all up with all the setting I'd normally use - all my passwords and WIFI stuff AND change all the wallpapers, themes, etc..

and then hit 3 buttons and go and make a brew while it crunches it's self back down into a brand new Instalation disk that i can give to other people
(there is a tick box to not put the passwords in if it's for others)
or keep for yourself to use as a reinstall (or for the missus comp etc)

Thats all beyond the realms of possibility for Windows.. (Nearest thing would be Norton Ghost)..

But i can do all that in my Linux while it's still running.. and it takes no more than 3 button and around 30 mins on my laptop

Just to point out that LINUX is NOT Microsoft..

It's not paid for stuff....

It's actually under protection of the GNU licence which means it's basically copyrighted to stay FREE.. It's the whole point of it
It's copyrighted to be free so some thief cant come along and make something great out of it and then close it up and sue you for copying it.
They wont let you profit off all those peoples hard work (A bit like Apple with osx)
though the BSD licence allows that - the Linux GNU licence does NOT

It's the total opposite buisiness model to Apple and Microsoft - and they did everything in their power to stop it - AND lost.. forever

Therefore there is NO problem with the legalities of sending it to each other or downloading etc..

So dont be thinking your doing something wrong by sharing files or systems - it's encouraged.
There are NO LICENCE fee's - period.

It is amazing that Linus Torvalds developed the Linux kernel, as we know it, 20 years ago and the community has made it what it is today.

Just think, 90% of all mobile phones, in use today, are based on the Linux kernel (The kernel is a computer program that is the core of a computer's operating system).

None of my devices, at home, run Microsoft software. Not the SmartTV, Mobile, PS4, 3 laptops or tablet.
All of them are either Linux or BSD (or a clone thereof).

We as a family (even the wife) embrace open source and will never go back.

The server that this forum is hosted on is Linux.

If it is good enough for NASA it is good enough for me.

I've been breaking it up into posts.. so that we do a bit each day.. so it's not too much at once.. and i can get chance to explain what we're doing 'my way'

which means as little jargon and whiz kid science as possible.. More of a spanners and hammer approach )

Because after all, they are just machines.. With lots of flashing lights and stuff, but still machines.. No 'magic' like in the movies..



I find it very interesting and even entertaining :-s though i liken it to working on my bike..

and when we get going i think some might surprise themselves on how much they actually know when they thought they didnt..

This comming week im starting on Hard Dives and how to prepare them for a mega installation of Linux... and that is going to be the hardest part..

after that it gets easier..



I forgot to post in this thread earlier.. There is a couple of software 'tools' you will need - One of them being 'Windows Explorer'..

I have no idea where it is in the menus of Win 10 now.. or even if it is still there..

It's the one you use to find your files and folders.. and to look whats in folders etc.... where you go and find your Pics and tunes etc..
and drag and drop them around..
It's the most important piece of kit we'll be using..

There's also 'My Computer' which is more or less the same..

So if anyones never used either of them before.. go have a look and get familiar what it is..

Also i'm going to show you how to clone and other such sciency sounding things.. to minimise any risk of a fk up happening..
and after youve got the hang of that your computer life is never going to be the same again.. ) )

and your local repairmans going to hate it )

And having a plug in USB drive to save all your pics and movies and tunes to is a must if you keep them in your C:\ drive or My Documents..


I know theres a few other Linux users on here and i'll be happy if they throw a few posts in.. :-bd After all i'm not a hero, and it's for the benefit of the forum users..

All i ask is they leave me with the Capital L I N U X # thread titles so i can make all the therads match and follow on from each other as we go along

my next one will be 'L I N U X 2 - Hard Drives' or similar..
