Favourite Rides: Bristol to Ellesmere ( shrops )

Post by Drac »

Ths is the ride I do more often than any other.
Take the M32 to meet the M4 then join the M48 across the old Severn Bridge.
Get off at the first junction onto the A466 past CHEPSTOW RACECOURSE, pass TINTERN ABBEY, loads of twistys through the WYE VALLEY on the way. Come out at MONMOUTH and caross the bridge staying on the A466 (not the A40) then a lovely road all the way to the A49 and HEREFORD. Stay on the A49 all the way up to the A49/A5 (DOBBIES) (watch out for a camera van just before the Little Chef opposite the A49/A417 usually positioned to get traffic heading south placed in a lay by as you head up the hill and as the single lane turns into 2 lanes but is still only 50mph) and then take the A5 towards OSWESTRY. Watch out for a speed camera (40mph) near SANDFORD and just after that there is often a Safety partnership car parked up. Take a right turn off the A5 towards WHITTINGTON on the B5009 and then A495 all the way to ELLESMERE

Time about 2h 40m - 3h 10m depending how you ride 130 Miles (approx)

Ahhh yes love the Tintern road through the Wye valley, during the summer I try to hit it early
less cars and sometimes a low mist gives the whole valley a prehistoric feel

cracking route Drac :-bd

i did this route again today - left home at 1030am, filled with fuel and got back home at 552pm. About 240 miles done and coming back through the Wye valley in the early evening, sun through the trees and only me on the road, I felt very lucky
